    Doxycycline 100mg Capsules can be used by adults and children over 12 years of age for the prevention of malaria.

     

    Whatis Doxycycline?

    Doxycycline capsues are a commonly prescribed antibiotic known as a tetracycline. Doxycycline is known to be a good antimalaria drug and can be used safely in adults and children 12 years and over.

    Travellers have reliably used Doxycycline for many years as a malaria tablet for travel around malaria regions where there is Chloroquine resistance. Areas that are resistant to Chloroquine include but are not limited to, Africa, South America and parts of Asia and Australiasia.

     

    How many Doxycycline should I buy?

    Knowing how many to buy can be tricky, just complete our assessment form and we will not only calculate how many capsules you will need but also check it is clinical suitable for you.

    Just remember that you need to take one capsule daily starting at least 2 days before arrival, every day there and for four weeks (28 days) on leaving. The easiest way to add this up is; holiday length + 30 capsules.

     

    How do I take Doxycycline?

    Doxycycline should be taken Daily as follows:

    How often should casules be taken? ONE capsule every day.
    When should I start treatment? TWO days before entering the malaria region and whilst there.
    How long when leaving risk area? 28 days (four weeks) after leaving the risk area.

    A typical 2 week (14 days) trip will need 44 capsules (2 + 14 + 28 capsules).

    It is important to note that no antimalarials are 100% effective and we cannot stress how important insect repellents and mosquito nets are. Always make sure you finish your course!

    What Side Effects May I Experience?

    Doxycycline is generally well tolerated but it has some side effects that must be mentioned. Doxycycline must always be swallowed with a full glass of water to prevent irritation of the throat. It is also associated with sensitivity to sunlight. This is called photosensitivity and affects about 3% of patients. Common side effects that may affect 1in 10 to 1 in 100 patients include:

    • Vaginal Infections
    • Headcahes
    • Nausea/Vomitting
    • Heartburn
    • Rash
    • Sensitivity to sunlight

     

    Who Can't Use Doxycycline?

    Our specialist pharmacist will assess all orders for suitability. Doxycycline is not suitable for:

    • Female patients who are pregnant or planning a pregnancy
    • Female patients who are breastfeeding
    • Children under 12 years of age.
    • Patients who are allergic to Doxycycline
